New Home Many Suprises Part Two

Welcome Back to Part 2

Hi everyone, I read somewhere that a good Blog is short, quick and to the point. From my own experience when diverting from Facebook or wherever, I usually will not stick around if the post turns into a 5 page essay. I just want to check-out the post that struck my interest and move on.
I'll try to keep my post brief, there is just some much to share. Enjoy

Things Uncovered

In the past it was common practice for a homestead to have a dumping area for trash and broken things.
Honestly...we didn't really expect to find so much Rusty Old Junk.
There were clues, when we viewed the property there was a bathtub in the backyard, a broken-down swing-set, and a lot of overgrown everything (grape vines to be specific).
Reality...we own several junk yards now...Sorry folks our dumps are CLOSED.

 We have a bottle dump

"Hey kids, get some fresh air and explore the new property".
They came back for a bucket, and surprised us with all these and more.
Of course they left all the broken one :)

Look there is more....

We found these under grapevines.

This is pile #2. I have the scrap-metal guy on speed dial now

Uncovering things can be fun too.

In "Let's Demo This" (a earlier post, check it out), I displayed the horrible mess that pulling down a ceiling can create. In all that mess we found interesting things that have been hidden away for years.

Anyone have time for a game of I Spy?

I spy a ring, a little shoe, a tobacco tin, a spooky clown, a farmers seed catalog,
 a
Model T parts list, a belt buckle, and some smokes, rubber cement, an eye dropper, and a secret message.

Our old house had a second floor addition built on to the back extension of the house somewhere around the 1970ish???  Before that, the space above the the kitchen was attic, which is why we have found all these random pieces from a by gone era.

This next one makes you Hmmm!

Yes, It is full of Whisky, and yes, we have sampled it, BUT....
who was hiding Black & White whiskey in the attic??

Home Warning Signs

After Christmas and the beautiful seasonal snowfall, Maine had a deep freeze set in. Below zero temperatures held the local area in it's grip for 2 to 3 weeks. The freezing weather quickly exposed the problem areas of this old house.

Lesson 1
Below zero temps + freezing cold entryway = frozen pipes

The weather realities of the past few months have given problems to many here in Maine, this is winter 2018 in a nutshell...

Snow then rain, snow then rain,

more snow and then more rain

Lesson 2
Lots of snow + lots of rain = flooded basement

So there you have it, buying a new house is full of learning experiences and surprises. Since June 2017 we've met the local wild life and some permanent residents too, uncover secrets in and around the house, and are more prepared and aware to handle problems in the future.

Just remember folks, When life smothers you with grape vines...make some freak'n wine

We did ;)
